WALL PAINTINGS : THE ALTERATIONS DUE TO MECHANICAL FACTORS

DIALOGUE BETWEEN AN ENGINEER AND A CONSERVATOR BASED ON THE HOMONYME BOOK

Simona Sajeva, civil engineer, specialised in the conservation of architectural decorations

Beatrice Villemin, heritaige conservator

The book analyzes the link between the mechanical behavior of architectural structures and its impact on murals.

The degradation of a mural is not only caused by environmental factors (temperature, humidity …) but also by the static disorder of the masonry to which it is linked.

In conservation-restoration practice, the static analysis of architectural support and its influence on wall paintings are often neglected, which may reduce the effectiveness of medium or long-term restoration actions.

This manual, published in November 2014, is the result of 15 years of experience of the author. It defines the methodology to be followed for the analysis of the architectural supports, which can be integrated in the operational protocols of the restoration sites. It provides further study to all heritage professionals, such as conservators, engineers, architects, offering them tools to understand the interaction between the disorder of structures and the degradation of murals.

The presentation is accompanied by concrete and illustrated cases.
